Map legends:
Did you know that, on average, the earth experiences around 300 earthquakes per day since the start of 2023?
By taking a look at the dynamic map below displaying the daily locations of earthquakes since the beginning of 2023. (Till todays, 7th February)
Tracking this phenomenon is incredibly interesting, and it's a daily occurrence to have an earthquake somewhere on earth.
While many of these earthquakes are of low magnitude, it's fortunate that significant magnitude earthquakes are uncommon.
Typically, a magnitude between 7-7.8 is considered a major earthquake and can cause severe damage, while a magnitude between 6-6.9 can lead to significant damage in highly populated areas.
Unfortunately, the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria are among the worst in the past decade, with Turkey frequently experiencing seismic activity.
In 2020 alone, Turkey recorded nearly 33,000 earthquakes, with 332 having a magnitude of 4.0 or higher, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
These data points were collected by the US Geological Survey (USGS) using a global network of seismographic stations that record the time, location, magnitude, and intensity of earthquakes.
