10 Years of Dubai Metro Ridership (2010 to 2021)

Northern Dubai

25th December 2022

Ever since I moved to Dubai I grew an interest in understanding what influences people to use the public transport system in Dubai.
Dubai is a unique city, with unique characteristics that can not be found anywhere else.

In this post, we are focusing on the Dubai Metro system.
( Note: Click on the image to track the yearly ridership values its dynamic)

By tracking data in many countries, it is undeniable that Most of the increase in transit mode share is due to Metro and Rail Mode of transport, Metro ridership growth reflect the growth of the community.

• Dubai Metro system is relatively young (opened in September 2009) with 10 stations in 2009, now in 2022, there are 47 stations.

• The time Series maps below visualize the yearly ridership of Dubai’s metro for the period 2010 -2021 using historical ridership data at Metro stations

• The location of the metro station (shapefile) can be found at (Source: Dubai Pulse: https://lnkd.in/dG3pzxkC )
• QGIS tool was used to create this visualization.

• It's quite interesting to track how some stations have grown from less than 1 million commuters per year to almost 9 million commuters per year.
What are the ingredients for success for these stations, and can this be repeatable?
On the other hand why some stations are ''moderately'' increasing compare to others?

• 2020 Covid pandemic has affected metro ridership as the city was in lockdown for a period of time, by 2021 we can see a significant recovery in ridership, 2022 data has not been published yet, however, many articles online indicate a positive increase in the ridership (almost back to normal before covid).
