1 Hour of Public Transport in Dubai

7th Februry 2023

Have you ever wondered what a typical hour of public transportation in Dubai looks like?
Take a look at this map I created, which showcases the movements of buses, metro trains, and trams during a typical weekday.

-Yellow points represent buses,
-Green points represent the green metro line,
-Red points represent the red metro line,
- Blue points represent the trams.

Dubai is home to :
- 280,884 Bus stops (approx )
- 47 Metro stations ( Red and Green Lines)
- 11 Tram station

Luckily, Dubai is rich with open-source data for transportation, I created this map below using open sources data from DubaiPulse, the data used:
1) GTFS (https://lnkd.in/dyd3xSpn).
2) Buses, Metro, and Tram Stops (https://lnkd.in/dyd3xSpn).

3) Bus, Metro, and Tram Lines (https://lnkd.in/dyd3xSpn).

Steps: ( the Main steps):

  1. Use GTFS library in Python to obtain the stop frequency.
  2.  Import the geodata for the stops and lines to QGIS.
  3. A lot of data processing work to join the stop frequency time to the stop location and prepare the data for QGIS.
  4. import the processed data to QGIS and Use either the Time manager or temporal function in QGIS to build this dynamic map.

Tools: - Python (GTFS library: to extract the stop frequency ) - QGIS (to create the map )
